Supermarkets, hypermarkets and some retail stores in Penang and some fast foods outlets have supported the state’s move towards a cleaner, greener Penang by not giving out free plastic bags when they shop. This takes effect from 1st January, 2011. Shoppers who need plastic bags are asked to contribute 20 sen towards the Anti-Poverty Funds.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had attended several launching of the ‘No Free Plastic Bags’ Campaign at various shopping malls and hypermarkets.
When interviewed, several shoppers said they support the state government’s effort.
